People who you see with a fit and healthy body, all know this one thing...
Those who ‘succeed’ at building a fit and healthy body…don’t expect to win on Day 1.
They understand it’s a journey, a learning process & something to enjoy.
What makes you feel better about trying to work on yourself?
1. You want six pack abs for holiday next month.
2. You want to be the grandparent who can still take their kids out to play in 30 years?
My advice is to stop trying to change quick and fast.
Diet culture, instagram, TikTok - it's all selling you quick fixes. Why? Because we will happily pay when people makes things faster for us. 7 minute abs? Sure. 6 week challenge? Absolutely.
Start considering your body like a savings account.
In 1, 5, 10, 20 years time, you can either have a shed tonne of wealth (health) to enjoy, or a hell of a lot of debt to undo.
My Body Bank Account Story
When I was 21, I had already built up a lot of body debt. Teenage years living on cereal, sandwiches and toast. University years trying to follow healthy 'diets' filled with healthy whole grains and low fat 'health' foods that only made me gain body fat.
In my later twenties I started to educate myself on nutrition (properly), started exercising (a lot) and dropped 14kgs. Did I learn a lot? Hell yes. Did I feel good in a bikini? Absolutely. Was all my effort to look good on holiday sustainable? Maybe, maybe not. Regardless, I had a suspicion there was more to it. I started feeling better than ever and I wanted it to last.
From A Body For Holiday To A Body For Life
Years later, on the other side of the world, living a completely different lifestyle has changed things. I am no longer in a rush to get below 60kg to go on holiday. I am not focused on keeping my body fat below 15% year round.
I keep myself healthy so that I feel confident, have good mental health and feel happy. Most importantly I eat well and exercise to turn up the best I can be for my husband, step kids, friends, family and clients.
I see the next 30-50 years ahead and don't worry about them often. But I sure as hell know what I'd like them to look like.
Do I want to be 40-50 and unable to play with any kids I may have by then? Nope. Do I want to be the 70 year old unable to look after grandkids because of my health? Or the 70 year old who still loves to paddle board, ride rides and go for long walks? I don't need to think about that too hard.
Are You Building A Body Savings Account Or Body Debt?
To use a crude measure... let's say making healthy choices costs me $10 in time and consideration.
Just like putting $10 a day into a savings account - by the end of the year I'd have $3650.
Times this by 20 years and I'd have $73,000. Over 30 years I'd have over $100,000.
If I reverse this and decide I don't care that much and decide that small $10 a day sacrifice isn't worth it. Instead I decide to spend an additional $10/day on decisions to give me instant gratification.
I could be in the equivalent of $100,000 worth of body debt.
I should include in this 'debt' excessive cardio and hurting your joints in an effort to outrun a bad diet.
Example? 20kg overweight, sore joints, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, reliant on medication... whatever this may lead to. The cost in lifestyle, physical and mental pain to get myself out of this situation? Not worth it, I don't reckon.
I use this example because I have clients in these situations. In their 20's, 30's, 40's, 60's - who have got themselves into an incredible amount of body debt.
